Light Gesture & Color

Jay Maisel

Maisel uses photographs and concise lessons to show how light, expressive gesture, and color transform ordinary scenes. Rather than focusing on camera settings, the book trains photographers to notice relationships, movement, and visual energy before pressing the shutter.

Why it’s worth finding

Jay's book has so many simple but important messages, like: “The drama in light exists not only in what is in light, but also in what is left dark. If the light is everywhere, the drama is gone.” It’s a simple idea, but easy to forget and, maybe more importantly, easy to forget to appreciate. Great book, especially for photographers just starting out.
